Have you heard of Anonymous Press (Α–Π) yet? Α–Π, an initiative by Karolis Kosas, is a self-sufficient publishing platform. I am in LOVE with this idea and of course had to check it out myself.

In under 60 seconds I published the book Fist Bump! The book is No. 7687 in the Α–Π library. It was a very easy process. I went to the Publish page and typed in the title “Fist Bump”. Why the title? I was just posting over on my Tumblr, FIST BUMP, so I had the phrase fresh in my mind. I love the imagery that Α–Π captured. The images, layout, and color of the cover are completely at the whim of Α–Π. All I did was type in the title and push the “Publish” button and voilà! A book!

I’m super curious to know what would happen if I submitted the title “Fist Bump” again. Would a completely different book of fist bump images emerge? Typing “fist bump” into Google Image Search does result in hundreds of images… For now, I will not let my curiosity get the best of me. I wouldn’t want to fill the Α–Π library with my own experiments!

I’m totally excited to order a print copy of Fist Bump! You can too for only $3 – it’s print on demand publishing.

So, what do you think? If you end up adding a title to the Α–Π library please leave a link in the comments so I can check it out!

The Sketchbook Project

February 9, 2013 in art, artist books, updates

my materials for The Sketchbook Project arrived!

I’m participating in The Sketchbook Project! I shared on Instagram last week that my materials arrived in the mail. I’ve spent the last few days thinking about what I want to do with the sketchbook. Will I choose a theme? What materials will I use? Maybe I’ll print out some large-format photos and include them as fold-outs? Whatever I decide to do, I plan on documenting the process here on my blog.

I’m excited to fill these pages up!

2013 LA Art Book Fair at MOCA

December 15, 2012 in artist books, books, events, photobooks, publishing

Printer Matter announced the first annual LA Art Book Fair this past Thursday on their Facebook page. The fair will take place February 1-3 (opening reception January 31), at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles.

As of right now I plan on going. Flights are reasonably priced, I’m just looking into my boarding options while I’m out there. Any hotel recommendations? I’ve never been to LA! Or, CA for that matter!

2012 NYABF

November 13, 2012 in artist books, events, photobooks

A couple of months ago I ventured to NYC for the 2012 NY Art Book Fair. Like last year there was just so much to see! I browsed, I shopped, I chatted, it was great.

I am putting together another post of the books I bought. Until then, did you attend the fair? What did you bring home with you?

MY SHOP!

September 17, 2012 in artist books, my shop, photobooks, updates

Nope, this is no joke. Though, it totally could be! I have been talking about opening a shop for YEARS and now it’s really really happening friends!

What am I going to be selling in my shiny new shop?

My book Apology is currently available for sale. My book Landed is coming soon!

I also plan on selling a couple of giclée prints from my current photographic work, and a giclée print of “Philip”. More info on prints soon!

My shop is going to be thoughtfully curated. I will not be selling everything I make, just the special pieces I want to share.

Why did I decide to go with Big Cartel?

Like I said, I have been thinking about opening an on-line shop for years and have considered a lot of different options. I decided to go with Big Cartel because it allowed for customization while also being super user friendly – I’m new to all of this! The customization option was key. I want you to feel like you’re at my shop. You’ll notice the look and feel of my shop is very much like this blog.

What is going to happen with my Etsy shop?

Last year I created my Etsy shop and have had the “COMING SOON!” message up ever since. I am a huge fan of Etsy and appreciate the community they have built. I am keeping the shop up with that “COMING SOON!” message because I see myself using it in the future for a special side project. It will not however be a space to buy my prints and books – that’s what my Big Cartel shop is for!

I AM SO EXCITED and I hope you are too!

90º – a pop-up book

August 2, 2012 in artist books

90º, an artist book by IWONA PRZYBYŁA, truly is a lovely object. I appreciate the design – when the book is opened to 90º a letter of the alphabet pops-up out of the page. I love typography-focused artist books!

The Invisible Book

July 10, 2012 in artist books

I’ve been working on my post recapping my experience at the 2012 VSW Photo-Bookworks Symposium and realized I never told you all about one of my most recent book purchases! Nearly a month ago, I ordered a copy of The Invisible Book, 2nd edition by Elisabeth Tonnard.

The Invisible Book is a book produced in limited edition at the affordable price of €0. It will work as a digital book too, on any platform. The edition is limited to 100 copies (neither numbered nor signed).

This is a product without a single fault, available at the lowest price possible. The book was made as a reaction to both the trend of decreasing booksales and the trend of increasing expectations from audiences.”

The 1st edition of the book sold out on the first day of the release, so when Tonnard announced the release of the 2nd edition I made sure not to drag my feet. Above is a screenshot of the PDF Invoice I was sent for my purchase. This is by far one of my favorite artist books in my collection. So smart.

Please note: personal info on the invoice was blacked out for the purpose of this post.

Goodnight iPad

June 28, 2012 in artist books

I was browsing in the special pop-up bookstore by ARTBOOK at VSW yesterday and literally ran across the room when I spotted Goodnight iPad by Ann Droyd sitting on the shelf. First of all, Goodnight Moon (by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd), which this parody is based off of was one of my favorite books as a young child. I was grinning like a fool standing in the store! Second, this is just so clever! I will most definetly be picking up a copy for my niece (Bella turns 4 next month – and yes, knows how to use an iPad already) this weekend at the 2012 Photo-Bookworks Symposium – and a copy for myself! I have quite the shopping list forming – and a grad student budget. This book must be mine though. Priority!

I also LOVE the video above – a reading of the book. It’s perfect.

“Modern life is abuzz. There are huge LCD WiFi HD TVs and Facebook requests and thumbs tapping texts and new viral clips of cats doing flips. Wouldn’t it be nice to say goodnight to all that? Like the rest of us who cannot resist just a few more scrolls and clicks, you may find yourself ready for bed while still clinging to your electronics long after dark. This book, which is made of paper, is a reminder for the child in all of us to power down at the end of the day. This hilarious parody not only pokes loving fun at the bygone quiet of the original classic, but also at our modern plugged-in lives. It will make you laugh, and it will also help you put yourself and your machines to sleep. Don’t worry, though. Your gadgets will be waiting for you, fully charged, in the morning.” – Penguin Group (USA)

TOMORROW NIGHT: artist talk with Scott McCarney

June 27, 2012 in artist books, events, exhibitions, ROC

Scott McCarney will be in conversation with curator Cyril Reade at 7pm TOMORROW NIGHT as part of the 2012 Photo-Bookworks Symposium at Visual Studies Workshop! The event is taking place in the auditorium. Will I see you there?

Above are photos (I took) from McCarney’s current exhibition at VSW: “Reversing the Catastrophe of Fixed Meaning: The Bookworks of Scott McCarney”. The exhibition is up through July 9th in VSW’s Bookstore and Gallery. Be sure to check it out!

7th Annual NY Art Book Fair

June 13, 2012 in artist books, events

YES! I am already counting down the days (106!) to the 7th Annual NY Art Book Fair!

I’m also looking forward to the Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference – Lucy Lippard and Paul Chan will be the keynote speakers this year.
