Have you heard of Anonymous Press (Α–Π) yet? Α–Π, an initiative by Karolis Kosas, is a self-sufficient publishing platform. I am in LOVE with this idea and of course had to check it out myself.

In under 60 seconds I published the book Fist Bump! The book is No. 7687 in the Α–Π library. It was a very easy process. I went to the Publish page and typed in the title “Fist Bump”. Why the title? I was just posting over on my Tumblr, FIST BUMP, so I had the phrase fresh in my mind. I love the imagery that Α–Π captured. The images, layout, and color of the cover are completely at the whim of Α–Π. All I did was type in the title and push the “Publish” button and voilà! A book!

I’m super curious to know what would happen if I submitted the title “Fist Bump” again. Would a completely different book of fist bump images emerge? Typing “fist bump” into Google Image Search does result in hundreds of images… For now, I will not let my curiosity get the best of me. I wouldn’t want to fill the Α–Π library with my own experiments!

I’m totally excited to order a print copy of Fist Bump! You can too for only $3 – it’s print on demand publishing.

So, what do you think? If you end up adding a title to the Α–Π library please leave a link in the comments so I can check it out!

2013 LA Art Book Fair at MOCA

December 15, 2012 in artist books, books, events, photobooks, publishing

Printer Matter announced the first annual LA Art Book Fair this past Thursday on their Facebook page. The fair will take place February 1-3 (opening reception January 31), at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles.

As of right now I plan on going. Flights are reasonably priced, I’m just looking into my boarding options while I’m out there. Any hotel recommendations? I’ve never been to LA! Or, CA for that matter!

I started reading The New Administration of a Fine Arts Education (published by Bureau for Open Culture) earlier this week. Have you heard of it? I was introduced to it over on Kate Bingaman-Burt’s Tumblr and immediately downloaded the PDF. I plan on buying the book ($12 – support print!), but for now reading on my iPad works well enough.

So far I find the interviews included in this book thought-provoking. As I am reaching the end of my own academic career, I can’t help but wonder if I will ever become an educator? Educator in the sense of being gainfully employed with a higher education institution. With a MFA that door will be open right? We’ll see – I’m OK with wandering down a path for now.

ESOPUS 16

April 26, 2012 in artist books, publishing

“Esopus is a twice-yearly arts magazine featuring fresh, unmediated perspectives on contemporary culture from a wide range of creative professionals. It includes artists’ projects, critical writing, fiction, poetry, visual essays, interviews, and, in each issue, an audio CD.

Published by the non-profit Esopus Foundation Ltd., the magazine has a simple mission: to provide an unfiltered, non-commercial space in which creative people and the public can connect in meaningful, productive ways.”

ESOPUS 16 was the third publication from Millennium Magazines that I added to my subscription list. I LOVE the physicality of this issue!

Also, you can listen to this issue’s CD on the ESOPUS website. So many great details!

“Legible documents a series of examinations and experiments in formal and environmental notions of legibility. The capacity to subconsciously decipher and understand design (specifically typography) in a civil capacity functions as a means to make living seamless.”

umool umool vol.9

April 24, 2012 in artist books, publishing

umool umool vol.9: the rejected, the recycled, the regenerated was one of my favorite publications exhibited at Millennium Magazines. umool umool is a magazine-formed project by artist Na Kim.

I was really attracted to the graphics and colors. I want a poster of the “Kill Your Darlings” page – common angst in editing!

Millennium Magazines @ MoMA

April 23, 2012 in artist books, exhibitions, publishing

The last couple of weeks have been so crazy I haven’t gotten around to posting about my 16 hrs in NYC until today! One of the many highlights of my trip was checking out Millennium Magazines at MoMA. After hearing about the exhibition a couple of months ago I knew I had to go and see it for myself. Check out all of those great covers!

I was introduced to some new to me titles and I have a few posts lined up this week focusing on a few of my favorite publications. See you tomorrow!

The exhibition is up through May 14th so you still have time to go yourself! I highly recommend it.

Third Annual Publications and Multiples Fair

April 17, 2012 in artist books, events, printing, publishing

Open Space’s Third Annual Publications and Multiples Fair is going to be April 28th and 29th this year and I really want to go! Baltimore is only 6 hrs from ROC… we’ll see!

“This annual event is a celebration and survey of artist publications, prints, objects in multiple and much more. Co-curated with Nicholas Gottlund of Gottlund Verlag in conjunction with his show, Baker’s Dozen, currently on view at Open Space, this year’s fair promises a wide variety of artist publications and multiples from Baltimore and abroad.”

Have you been to the fair the last couple of years? What did you think? I’m excited to see that David Senior will be lecturing this year. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing him speak at the 2011 Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference in New York.
